IMO, all of those candidates are poor choices. But, as for the BMW, well, the E36 compact is one of the worst BMWs ever built. Because they suck. The problems that plague them are typical for the E30-E46. The most important thing to check would be the rear subframe and rear shock mounts. If they are anything but solid, walk away.
